ClickHouse is a columnar engine: it reads a few columns over many rows quickly, and it dislikes single-row writes. The deciding test fits in one question: do you write in batches and read in aggregates?
- Suits it: application logs, metrics, product events, inserted in batches and queried as counts, sums and percentiles over months
- Does not suit it: an e-commerce basket, a row updated on every click, a uniqueness constraint to enforce, that is PostgreSQL
- Compute tops out as it does for the other engines: interactive exploration over terabytes is designed with that limit in mind, not against it
